The verses here tell us that she spent all that she had with no real positive results. She tried everything to get better and lost everything in the process. For 12 years she went to doctors, friends, healers, the church, and probably even tried home remedies and still nothing.
She just learned to live with it. It had become so apart of her that she probably couldn't even remember what it was like to live without it. Then one day she heard that Jesus was coming to town. "Could this be that Jesus that I have heard people talk about in the market? The One who performs miracles for people? I heard about how He calmed the storm on the sea the other day and how he turned water into wine and gave sight to the blind-could He do something for me?"
This was a woman at the end of her rope and probably felt that this was her last chance-if this doesn't work, then nothing will. So she gathered whatever strength she could muster and braved the crowds as they pushed and shoved with the hopes of at least seeing Jesus. She however, felt that looking at Him wasn't enough, "I have to meet Him, see Him, touch Him and beg Him to heal me! I hope and pray He will, but why would He I'm insignificant and nobody cares whether I live or die."
She soldiered on. She wasn't strong enough and was knocked down by those around her. At this time she had a choice to make, "I could either stay here and let this final chance slip away or I could fight and crawl on my knees towards my only hope."
What resilience and courage it must have taken for her to choose the latter! As she fights through the crowds-there He is! I see His 12 disciples protecting Him and trying to keep people from physically overpowering and overwhelming Him. The crowds are reaching out and calling out to Him, "Heal me I am blind, no heal me I am deaf, I have a sick child, bless my home" and so on. They were all grabbing at Him, when this woman on here hands and knees, as she fights through the crowds and fights the voices of past failures and defeats realizes that she will not get close enough to be face to face or shake His hand with one last ditch effort lunges forward; with the mindset that "If I could just touch the hem of His garment, maybe just maybe I will be healed. Yes, I believe it, I know it-just the hem of the HIM is all I need to change my life forever."
That last push, that last ounce of strength she touches the bottom of Jesus clothes. Jesus felt a familiar surge of power leave His body and asked who touched me. The 12 said everybody is touching you, they are all reaching and grabbing for you-but Jesus said, "No this touch was different."
The woman, now with a new found strength, was able to stand up and come forward and tell Jesus that it was her. She was healed, made whole, her past was wiped clean, she can start anew with a fresh life!
Her story is not unlike the story of many. Your past and those things in your life that have been a "sickness" to you for many years have prevented you from moving forward, growing, or getting "better". Perhaps you have been knocked down and forgotten about by those most trusted and you feel that even God may have forgotten about you.
Well, I am here to tell you that He hasn't forgotten you-He wants to heal you and wipe away the past just like this woman. It was her faith that allowed her to breakthrough. It wasn't a strong religious faith- it was a faith that said "only Jesus can do this for me."
Gather the strength, press forward, and reach for Jesus-your breakthrough awaits.
